Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our body. It acts as a cushion or a lubricant and it is found in our joints, eyes and skin. Newborns have large amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA), which explains why their skin is perfectly plump and wrinkle free! Unfortunately as we age our production of HA declines. Our skin loses 50% of the HA it had at age 20 by the time we’re in our 40’s.
Hyaluronic acid can be replenished topically or injected into the skin. Topical products provide hydration and improve skin texture and roughness. HA is naturally a water loving substance so it holds in moisture and improves fine lines and wrinkles. Application is recommended twice daily.
Fillers comprised of hyaluronic acid are injected into the dermal layer of the skin. They give immediate plumping and lift to areas of lost volume. They can also help to smooth and soften fine lines and wrinkles. HA fillers are injected into the temples, under eye area, cheeks, around the mouth, lips, jawline, chin and hands. Volume from HA fillers lasts 6 months to 2 years depending on the area injected and the product used.
